Jesus Navas: I have the same excitement I had when I was a kid

As he closes in on Sevilla's all-time appearance record, winger Jesus Navas admitted that the joy and excitement is still the same for him as it was when he was a child.

The former Manchester City man has racked up 408 appearances across two separate spells with his boyhood club, either side of that move to England, and is closing in on Pablo Blanco's tally of 413.

Still just 32, Navas will comfortably set a new record for most club appearances and took some time to reflect on how far he has come in his career.

"I'd like to be remembered as a player who gave everything in every game, who wanted to help the team and was always available to his coach," he told MARCA.

"I'm very proud that I can get that [appearance] record. Sevilla have given me everything, I love it here and have grown both as a person and player at this club.

"My desire remains the same as always. The same as it was when I was a kid dribbling around puddles.

"I'm the same as always. I turn up at the training ground with maximum enthusiasm and who always thinks about improving and learning. Humility is the most important thing."

Navas, who celebrates his 32nd birthday on Tuesday night against Liverpool, also revealed what he will be wishing for as a present.

"I dream of the Champions League, this team wants to go far in that competition," he added.

"We want to qualify out of the group phase, get to the last-16 and not just stay there this season. We want to get further.

"Our goal is to go far in the Champions League and I think we have the team to achieve it. We want to overcome the next barrier."
